Hope you are all safe and well. Here’s to a happier 2021. Just touching base with you all. Obviously, it is a bit difficult for us to arrange any dates for early events at this moment in time. We can only be hopeful and optimistic that with the vaccination programme gathering pace the current situation will improve. We are hoping our usual training day on Easter Monday will be a possibility. We will keep you updated.
After a brilliant start to the indoor season at Moreton Morrell, sadly it ground to a halt in November and it looks like the remaining events will suffer the same fate.
In the meantime, Team Young have managed to keep us entertained with various events on Zoom. Caroline organised a brilliant festive quiz on Wednesday 30th December, based on the Cluedo board. With at least 11 contestants including Ruth and Bob Auton all the way from virtually ‘COVID free’ sunny Northumberland. Lovely to hear and see them. Jane and Miles took the honours with Marian and Steve runners up, Ruth and Bob taking 3rd.
On Wednesday 13th January Emma organised a highly informative talk by Amy Bracey from the Carriage Foundation. We had 25 interested parties. Some of us older members have been on Carriage Foundation visits to many carriage collections, both private and otherwise, in foreign climes as well as in the UK. Amy gave us an insight into the role of the Carriage Foundation (which has now gained Charitable Status) both past, present and in the future. In the present, a book has now been published, The A-Z of Carriages, available from the Carriage Foundation. (LINK HERE) In the future, it is hoped that the UK may have its own national museum dedicated to carriages and carriage driving. Elsewhere in the world, carriage driving is a national sport, and many countries have national museums that have spectacular exhibits.
The next talk will be on Wednesday 3rd February by Frank Campbell, who has represented Team GB on several occasions.
Other future talks are planned:
3rd March – Dan Naprous talking about the Devils Horsemen and their stunt/film work.
7th April – Virginia Kouyoumdjian talks about Heavy Horses around the world
Many thanks to Caroline and Emma for all their hard work.
Hopefully, we can all get together soon. In the meantime, take care and stay safe.
